Artists that I like……….

As well as producing my own art I love to admire other peoples. Art always looks so much better in real life, and so if an opportunity arises to visit an exhibition I try and make the effort to go.

louise-bourgeois-spiderLouise Bourgeois
Born in Paris, 1911, Louise Bourgeois is an artist and sculptor. I first saw her work when I visited an exhibition at the Tate Modern in London. Outside the museum, sitting by the River Thames was a huge spider sculpture titled Maman. Taller than a double decker bus, the spider had an eerie quality about it that I loved! Her work spans over seven decades and is extremely varied, it seems to represent her life in a very abstract way.

Francis Bacon
Born in Dublin, 1909, Francis Bacon was a figurative painter. His artwork is known for its bold, and often violent or nightmarish imagery, which typically shows figures twisted in isolation. I became interested in his work while studying at College and have since seen an exhibition of his work at the Tate Britain. His peculiar life and paintings captured my imagination.

Born in County Durham 1971, Sarah-Jane Szikora is an active painter with a humorous imagination. She paints exaggerated figures and animals, naughty food and gingerbread men. Her pictures are funny and colourful and would make anyone smile. I purchased a limited edition print of hers a few years ago titled Broken Biscuits which shows a gingerbread man in a hospital bed with his arm bitten off. Early this year I attended an open evening event of her SmartyPants exhibition.

Nitty Nora

Govinder Nazran
Hatched in England, 1964, Govinder was a fine art painter. He was well known for his dog and cat paintings which sometimes contained real dollar bills. He wrote that his art was about good and evil – innocence and malevolence. He left it to the individual to look at his paintings and choose what they would like to see. I saw the good and thought that his paintings were interesting and pretty. Some of his paintings were made into sculpture, we have one of these called Nitty Nora.
